Here at Pafos Zoo we have a couple of animals that full into the Rodents category, Our lovely but shy Porcupine and our Lazy Red Squirrel although there are about 2,277 species of rodents. Rodents are characterised by a single pair of continuously growing incisors in each of the upper and lower jaws which must be kept short by gnawing. Most rodents eat seeds or plants, though some have more varied diets.
The crested porcupine (Hystrix cristata), This mammal is recognizable by the quills that run along the head, nape, and back that can be raised into a crest.
The Patagonian mara, (Dolichotis patagonum), is a relatively large rodent, somewhat rabbit-like animal that is found in open and semi-open habitats in Argentina
