DISTRIBUTION: North Africa, now regarded as extinct in the wild.
DIET: Grasses and plants with a high water and protein content.
NOTES: This species is one the best adapted big animal to dry, hot climate. Using a special cooling system in their nose, which allows them to survive with a higher body temperature , they can also survive some months without drinking, only taking water out of the plants they eat. They are now being successfully bred in captivity and are slow being re introduced into the wild.
